The lone cross-country race in the entire Grand-Prix Series is the ever-popular St. Michael’s Jolly Elf Trail Run 5K. Now in its sixth year, the race will be held on Saturday, December 8, at Bond Park in Cary. The final race of this year’s Second Empire Grand-Prix Series just happens to be on the final day of 2012. The Run in the New Year 5k will be held on December 31st at the Cary Towne Center at the stroke of midnight. What better way to bring in the New Year than with a late-night race! Participants will run on a well-lit course that starts at Cary Towne Center’s food court. The course will loop around the Andy Foundation’s Miracle League baseball filed and the mall. The Fall 2012 portion of the Second Empire Grand-Prix Series has officially come to a close. The last race – the Run in the New Year 5K — was held at 11:59 pm on December 31st in Cary. Nearly 500 people celebrated the first moments of 2013 with a literal burst of activity. Congratulations to men’s winner Will Bass, who crossed the finish line in 16:04, and to top woman Rachel Krasich, who ran an 18:35. Click here for complete race results.
As for Series Standings, the final results have at last been tabulated. Brett Howell, who was second overall in the Spring 2012 Series, nabbed first place thanks to some incredible performances this fall, including first-place victories at the Triangle Run/Walk for Autism 5K and the St Michael’s Jolly Elf Trail Run 5K. Congratulations are also in order for the remaining overall winners – Omar Wiggan, Matthew Loeffler, Ashley Bass, and Andrew McIver.
On the women’s side, Kristy Smith roared back to take first place overall thanks to a number of strong finishes at the tail end of the Series. In the Spring 2012 portion of the Series, Kristy was third in her age group so many, many kudos to her for moving up. Finishing out the top five female spots are Dawne Schloot, Anna Banka, Kris Grande, and 13-year-old Murphy Credle.
The Awards Luncheon for the Fall Series will be held on Saturday, January 25, at Second Empire Restaurant & Tavern. Email invitations for overall and age-group winners, as well as those who completed six or more Series races will be send out within the next week. The luncheon is complimentary for winners and the 6-races-or-more runners. Guests are welcome for a mere $20, which can be paid on the day of the luncheon.
